The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett

This was worth the wait!!! The pages fly by and you will get to know every character. Amazing read.

The Calamity Club was just soo good! Kathryn’s writing is beautiful! This book made me feel so many different emotions, anger, sadness, happiness, disgust, hope. I laughed, I cried and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute! I was never bored, I was always intrigued. And I loved the main character! She was strong, independent, cunning and brave, and most of all kind! I will be recommending this book to everyone!

I absolutely loved this book! Kathryn Stockett writes another woman driven masterpiece. Her characters are rich and full of life even in the most desperate situations. I was truly invested in characters Meg and Birdie and their plight from the beginning. Stockett has a true gift for capturing the historical elements of the story in a way that makes you want to learn more. I read because so many people had recommended it.

I loved this novel so much, I could not put it down until knowing the fate of the well drawn characters. Birdie is from a poor family from the Delta, and when debts threaten her family, she travels to Oxford, Mississippi to ask her sister for money. Birdie is such a strong, resilient woman, facing adversity and learning more about herself everyday. The other main character is Meg, sent to an orphanage and mistreated by the woman in charge, Garnett Pittman. Mrs, Pittman is a narrow minded person, leading an anti vice crusade that is racist, hypocritical, as well as plain evil. There is so much to unpack in this novel, with themes such as racism, intolerance, homosexuality, poverty. I highly recommend this novel. I know some people felt it was too long, or dragged, but I could have read about Birdie, Frances, Meg, Charlie and the rest of the characters for another 600 pages

It’s been a long wait for the sophomore effort from the author of the wildly successful book The Help, but it was well worth the wait. This one takes place in 1930s Mississippi during the Great Depression. It was a time of strict segregation and things such as forced sterilization for many women labeled as feeble minded. This is a story of a group of women living and trying to survive in this environment. They come together with a plan to make enough money for each of them to move on to, hopefully, a better life. The women are wonderful characters, especially Birdie. The story kept me wanting to keep reading to find out how it would all end. Great story!

One of the best books I have read in 2026! This epic novel was incredibly written with characters that i will not soon forget. Set in Oxford Mississippi in 1933, this novel has two stories that intertwine: Meg, an orphan that was abandoned mysteriously by her loving mother, and is desperately waiting for her return; and Birdie, a single woman, who is trying every way to save her family’s home. With a cast of characters that are wildly unique and witty, the reader will love some and despise others. The plot has twists and turns that will make you laugh and cry.

Do you know that feeling of standing a new novel and within 2 pages you’re thinking, “oh, this is a good one!” That’s this story and more. It had me holding my breath, feeling badly for the main character and laughing out loud. 600+ pages of excellent storytelling.

I loved this book. It is so well written with beautiful character development. It is also very informative. Be sure to read the author’s notes.

This is by far my number 1 read for 2026-Kathryn Stockett has outdone herself again with The Calamity Club. The characters pull you right in and keep you hooked. I just hope we don’t have to wait as long for her next book-BUT-it was worth the wait! Five stars all day long!

Ms Stockett first genius is her ability to research her topic. She takes her time and blends it into a characters’ words or actions. Then the story shows the characters’ dealing with the times. This book is real with a true picture of a moment in our history and shows the strength and goodness of human nature.
