This was worth the wait!!! The pages fly by and you will get to know every character. Amazing read.
The Calamity Club was just soo good! Kathryn’s writing is beautiful! This book made me feel so many different emotions, anger, sadness, happiness, disgust, hope. I laughed, I cried and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute! I was never bored, I was always intrigued. And I loved the main character! She was strong, independent, cunning and brave, and most of all kind! I will be recommending this book to everyone!
I absolutely loved this book! Kathryn Stockett writes another woman driven masterpiece. Her characters are rich and full of life even in the most desperate situations. I was truly invested in characters Meg and Birdie and their plight from the beginning. Stockett has a true gift for capturing the historical elements of the story in a way that makes you want to learn more. I read because so many people had recommended it.
I loved this novel so much, I could not put it down until knowing the fate of the well drawn characters. Birdie is from a poor family from the Delta, and when debts threaten her family, she travels to Oxford, Mississippi to ask her sister for money. Birdie is such a strong, resilient woman, facing adversity and learning more about herself everyday. The other main character is Meg, sent to an orphanage and mistreated by the woman in charge, Garnett Pittman. Mrs, Pittman is a narrow minded person, leading an anti vice crusade that is racist, hypocritical, as well as plain evil. There is so much to unpack in this novel, with themes such as racism, intolerance, homosexuality, poverty. I highly recommend this novel. I know some people felt it was too long, or dragged, but I could have read about Birdie, Frances, Meg, Charlie and the rest of the characters for another 600 pages
It’s been a long wait for the sophomore effort from the author of the wildly successful book The Help, but it was well worth the wait. This one takes place in 1930s Mississippi during the Great Depression. It was a time of strict segregation and things such as forced sterilization for many women labeled as feeble minded. This is a story of a group of women living and trying to survive in this environment. They come together with a plan to make enough money for each of them to move on to, hopefully, a better life. The women are wonderful characters, especially Birdie. The story kept me wanting to keep reading to find out how it would all end. Great story!
